Cleaning up after the holidays.

Claudia Forward - Tuesday, January 17, 2012

Christmas is over.  It’s time to put things back where they belong.

Cleaning up after the celebration is something that has to be done and in fact, it is part of the whole holiday experience so why not treat it that way?  While cleaning is never our first choice for fun it can actually become fun if you think ahead.  And we know that fun leads to good photos, doesn’t it?

Equip everyone with a bucket, rubber gloves if necessary, dusters and polish or disinfectant, depending on what they are cleaning, and then perhaps have a race to see who can finish their tasks properly in the shortest time.  Don’t let them get away with a quick flick of the duster though because this job has to be done well first time round!

In fact, make it a competition with prizes for the best results.  This could be a bar of chocolate, or the right to pick the first family movies etc.  It really doesn’t have to be much because it’s all in the name of fun anyway.

Now, while they are all busy cleaning, pull out your camera and take a few photos.  Yes, really!  These photos will complete the record of your holiday season and it is at times like this that you get the pictures that you treasure forever.  Can’t you just picture your child with rubber gloves up to his elbows and soap bubbles on his nose?

Photography doesn’t have to focus on the ‘pretty’ events.  Record the fun times, too, even if they aren’t ‘pretty’.

Make a circus of it

Claudia Forward - Thursday, February 17, 2011

Taking photos is loads of fun, and displaying them even more so.

Sometimes the sheer number of photos you have at your disposal can be overwhelming; you’d love to show them all, or can’t decide between a few of your favourites.

A fun way to collate and display your favourites is to create a collage of them. This is even more effective, and looks fantastic, when you “theme” it and include images of props and inanimate objects, as well as those gorgeous photos of your loved ones.

For example … make a circus of it!

Or pick any theme you like, really!

Choose a few of those most-wanted images and create a collage by bringing in various sized, yet complementary images. Mix the black and white with vibrantly coloured; perhaps a close up, black and white of a carousel horse positioned next to a multicoloured bunch of balloons against a blue sky background.

Jumble these with the photographs of your laughing family, your playing children or brightly smiling partner, to complete not just the look, but the “feel” of a circus.

The effect can be dramatically enhanced by the including various sized images. Look beyond the photos you’ve taken yourself; can you crop one to capture just the bright pink of fairy floss, or a close up of a pair of gorgeous smiley eyes?

Ultimately, you finish with a compelling mix of portraits and still images, greys and brilliant colours and a variety of sizes. The effect is dazzling, yet cohesive by keeping your collage to a particular theme.

It creates an experience you can relive, rather than just a picture to admire.

You also get to include a few of your favourites, without having to choose between them.
