Taking Photos at the Beach

Summer is the time to hit the beach!

We have put together some tips for you to use when taking photos at the beach. They include a couple of tips on taking care of your camera at the beach.

This article was written for our monthly Newsletter - join our email list to be the first to read our new tips and specials.

  1. Protect Your Camera at the Beach
The simplest and cheapest way to protect your camera from sand at the beach is to put it into a sealed plastic bag.

  2. Removing Sand from Your Camera
If you get sand onto your camera don’t wipe it as you will risk scratching the lens or lodging the sand deeper. Try the following:
    - Blow where the sand is;
    - Use a very soft brush and try to brush it away.
If this doesn’t work take it to a camera repairer.

  3. Reduce Shadows on Faces
The easiest way to do this is to turn your flash on, stand back a little and zoom in. To force your flash on, you will need to change your camera setting to ‘P’ and then select the ‘Flash’ or ‘Forced Flash’.

  4. Watch Shadows in your Image
The main shadow to be wary of, is your own!

  5. Get Down Low
When taking photos of kids playing in the sand, take the photos at their eye level. You will then capture their facial expressions rather than the tops of their heads.

  6. Watch Your Background
People are constantly walking along the beach. When you are taking a photo, watch if someone is walking into your frame. Remove clutter, like towels, beach bags etc, out of the frame, unless they are part of the story of your photo.

  7. Horizon
Try to keep the horizon as straight as possible.

  8. Change Your Position
Rather than standing in the centre of the photo, have your subjects stand to one side, looking into the photo.

  9. Avoid Squinting
Have the sun facing at an angle to your subjects’. This will help to reduce the squinting.

  10. Avoid Reflection
Try to shield your lens to avoid the sun reflecting from your lens onto your image (will look like a flare).
