Preparing for a Family or Baby Portrait

There are a few important things to consider when preparing for a Family or Baby Portrait. The main ones include the timing of your photo shoot and the style, colour and shade of your clothing.

Below are a few tips that will help you get the most our of your photo shoot, and ensure your photographer creates beautiful portraits:

  1. Timing:
Firstly, you know your child, make sure you book a shoot for when you know your kids are at their best. When they have had their sleep or their feed. Happier children make it easier on the photographer and help to get that ‘perfect’ shot.

  2. Clothing – Keep it Uniform
What you wear is very important. Keeping your outfits uniform is they key. First, pick a style for your clothing: classy, casual, or contemporary. Generally speaking, something simple without loud patterns or words is the best. It's usually best to wear clothing that matches in style and from the same color palette. That will put the emphasis of the photos on you and your faces, not on your clothes. If your personalities lend themselves to bright colours keep everyone being photographed in similar shades.

Another consideration is that the more fashionable your clothing is, the faster your photos will date.

  3. Shades of Black and White:
Think about your outfits in shades of black and white. If you are all wearing the same shade of shirt, one person doesn't draw the attention away from the whole group. Since most photo packages include images in both colour and black and white, you will want to think about how your outfits would appear in those shades.

Dressing in black also works well for baby photography, it keeps the focus directly on the baby and other features within the frame.

  4. Props:
Another idea is to use props in your photos. This is a good way to get different looks out of a single outfit. Think about things that characterise you and your family and your personalities: accessories, items from your line of work, hobbies, interests and throw them in a bag.

Most importantly, wear what you are comfortable in, it will show in the photos.

With the parents in black shirts, this acts as a frame for the child.

White shirts with jeans look great. The added benefit is that do not date as quickly.
